Physical Encryption
Thero Security Device

Digital privacy is a key issue in our modern world as most people now have a computer and a smartphone, but not everyone has the professional knowledge to handle it properly. It’s not difficult to get people to open their wallets if there is a reliable and handy tool without all the technical fuss for providing encrypted online communications.

Developed by Spanish designers Roman Torre and Angeles Angulo, Thero is an encryption tool created with 3D printing technology. Compared to the encryption software with an on-screen interface, Thero’s physical presence could put a lot of computer laymen at ease. Users can switch between the four security levels available by simply rotating the lid. The first level is basically an open network connection with some security options; the second level makes use of a Tor Relay for encrypted traffic; the third level blocks social websites to curb distraction; and the fourth and strictest level only allows for local navigation.

The Thero will be put into mass production in the near future. While the team has not explained in detail how Thero works, a simple object sitting next to a computer or phone that offers encrypted data flow would make a lot of people’s lives much easier.
