Paul’s Porsche
1979 Porsche 935

The 1979 Porsche 935, once campaigned by American film star Paul Newman, will be available at the Pebble Beach auction held by Gooding & Co. in August. The twin-turbo racing coupe with unique chassis number 009 00030 carries an estimated price tag of 4.5-5.5 million US dollars. Fully restored and displaying its iconic Le Mans “Hawaiian Tropic” livery by the renowned Porsche specialist Paul Willison in 2006, this racer won Best in Class at the 2007 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

The formidable history of this legendary Porsche began at Le Mans on 10th June 1979. Teamed up with Dick Barbour and Rolf Stommelen, the then fifty-four-year-old Newman finished a strong second while helping the legendary French endurance contest draw the largest attendance in its history. The 030 935 was sponsored by Apple the following season and remains the only racecar the company has ever supported. Teammates Bobby Rahal, Brian Redman, and Bob Garretson then took the 030 to the overall victory at the 1981 Le Mans classic. Amazingly, the 935 was far from finished as drivers Wayne Baker, Jim Mullen, and Kees Nierop captured another overall Le Mans victory in 1983.
