Octo Time
MB&F Octopod

MB&F has once again created an innovative timepiece in collaboration with Swiss clockmaker L’Epée 1839. Taking inspiration from the underwater octopus as well as the glass bathysphere from James Cameron’s film The Abyss, Octopod has a transparent spherical ‘head’ carrying the movement inside and eight kinetic legs for supporting.

Octopod’s transparent bubble works in a similar way to a ship’w chronometer. It features 360 degrees rotation on both vertical and horizontal planes for displaying the time legibly. Time telling is handled by the finely counter-balanced regulator mounted on the minute hand with assistance from the hourly marker and numeral indicators. The movement, featuring 159 components and specifically crafted by L’Epée for this project, appears to be floating inside the crystalline sphere as its baseplate is made of a transparent glass plate treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides. The manual-winding movement has a power reserve of fittingly eight days. To wind the clock or set the time, simply make use of the double-depth square socket key.

The body, legs and sphere of the Octopod are made of 309 parts without counting those inside the movement. Each mechanical looking leg can be individually adjusted to varying heights so the Octopod can stand or crotch on uneven surfaces. The Octopod is available in three limited editions in black PVD, blue PVD, and palladium in silver colour with 50 pieces each.
