To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple has just demoed the iPhone X at the Steve Jobs Theatre in its new headquarters, Apple Park. Although the phone had received mixed comments before the demo, it did not stop people looking forward to the launch.
The highlight of the phone is of course the 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED edge-to-edge display with 2,436 x 1,125px (458 ppi) resolution, Dolby Vision and HDR10 support. The front facing camera has a new True Depth camera system that enables Face ID, the face recognition technology that is replacing Touch ID. Face ID projects more than 30,000 invisible IR dots for creating a mathematical model of the user’s face for preventing trickery using photos or masks, as it only unlocks the phone when the user look straight at it. The saved facial information is protected by a secure enclave for extra safety. The identification process is on the device but not in the cloud so that user privacy is guaranteed. The A11 Bionic chip enables new machine learning, which is why Face ID can properly identify the user even there are some changes on appearance, such as wearing glasses or a hat, having a new hair style or even growing a beard.
With its six-core CPU design, the A11 Bionic features a neural engine that performs up to 600 billion operations per second for real-time processing. The four efficiency cores are 70 percent faster than the A10 Fusion, while the two performance cores are 25 percent faster than before. The dual 12-megapixel rear camera system has been redesigned and is equipped with dual optical image stabilisation and ƒ/1.8 and ƒ/2.4 apertures.
Wireless charging is also finally happening for the iPhone. Even though wireless charging on a mat is nothing new for similar devices, we do look forward to the the launch of the new AirPower mat which can charge iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods simultaneously. Last but not least, after being with us for ten years, we finally say goodbye to the Home button and are excited to try the new navigation by gestures incorporated within the new iOS 11.
The iPhone X is available in space grey and silver in 64GB and 256GB models. Pre-order starts on October 27 with availability beginning November 3.
