Negative Space And Geometry
Voukenas Petrides

Founded by Greek designer Andreas Voukenas and American architect Steven Petrides, Voukenas Petrides is a furniture design studio inspired by architecture. The duo pays extra attention to structure, light and shadow and a sense of space to create timeless and poetic pieces.

The items are mainly crafted in birch plywood, while the structure and the concept behind each item takes the centre stage. Take the Air Chair as an example; it is a standard chair if you view it from the front, but if you view it from the side then the quadrangular negative space, which can also be used as a bookshelf, stands out. The Barycenter Stool only consists of three pieces of plywood and leans 7 degrees from vertical to achieve stability. You can also use the stool as a side table. Out of all the items, the Apeirohedron Stool is probably the most interesting one. The name itself means “a polyhedron with an infinite number of faces” in geometry, which perfectly describes what it is. Other than being used as a stool or a side table, it can easily become a mood lighting fixture, or a cat hideaway.
