More Than Reality
Ford GT mixed reality experience

In the 1960s, Ford was keen to take the Le Mans championship away from Ferrari, and thus, the Ford GT40 was born. Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, Ford and Microsoft have teamed up to create the exhibit “An American Supercar”, which allows visitors to experience the legendary race car in an innovative way.

A 1967 Ford GT40 Mark III race car and a 2017 Ford GT are placed inside the venue. After putting on the Microsoft HoloLens headset, visitors can see holographic images, created by app developer Zengalt, overlaid onto the actual environment. For example, when viewing the GT 40 through the HoloLens, one can see a holographic image of its engine. The experience is supported with audio, meaning visitors can hear the V8 roar at the same time. In a different part of the experience, the exhibition venue is transformed into the Circuit de la Sarthe race track through mixed reality technology.

The exhibit is currently being shown at the LA Auto Show but will return to Petersen Automotive Museum shortly and remain there until Fall 2018.
