Few modern coachbuilt cars balance heritage and originality quite like the 2016 Zagato Mostro powered by Maserati. First revealed at the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, it immediately stood out as one of the most striking creations of Zagato’s so-called “Iconic” era, a period dedicated to reinterpreting the dramatic forms of the 1950s and ’60s through a contemporary lens.
Commissioned to mark Maserati’s centenary, the Mostro draws clear inspiration from the 1957 Maserati 450 S Coupé, originally developed for Le Mans. Rather than replicate the past, Zagato reimagined it with modern materials and engineering. The body is formed entirely from carbon fibre and sits on a lightweight MonoCell chassis reinforced with a tubular steel structure. Its proportions remain faithful to classic endurance racers, with a long bonnet, compact rear, and a purposeful fixed rear wing, while butterfly doors add a theatrical touch.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 sourced from Maserati, producing around 420 hp. The engine is paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox in a transaxle configuration, offering a balanced and engaging driving experience that deliberately feels analogue. It follows the spirit of historic racing machines rather than chasing modern supercar extravagance.
Inside, the cabin is stripped back and driver-focused, with fixed side windows and a minimal layout that prioritises function over luxury.
Just five examples of the Mostro coupé were produced, making it one of the rarest modern coachbuilt cars in existence. With only 106 kilometres recorded and Austrian road registration, this particular example remains remarkably close to delivery condition and is currently available for sale from German-based dealer Axel Schuette
