What is the golden ratio? Look at the sunflowers planted on the roadside, the nautiloids found on the beach or the patterns on the wings of a butterfly; these are all examples from nature which fulfills the formula of the golden ratio. During 300 BC, mathematician Euclid first loaded the golden ratio into his Eucid’s Element and since then, the formula has been regarded as the formula of highest visual advantage, causing it to be implemented into different creative and design realms. Till the 21st century, this classic formula still holds an important place in the world of contemporary design.

Designed by Taiwan’s Design YxR design studio, the Mathematics Scissors were created based on the golden ratio. Its shiny black and grey appearance gives people a feeling of refine stability. Apart from that, there are also multiple holes on the flat scissor handles for the fingers to go through, making it easy to use. This pair of unordinary looking scissors has a round and flat silhouette, which clearly expresses its influence from the golden ratio. Other than being innovative, it also embodies a sense of intangible harmony that makes people comfortable just by looking at it. This might once again prove the visual advantages brought upon by the golden ratio is a fact, and that is why it is still constantly being used by designers as their creative inspiration.
