The HuskeeCup

Some people can’t get through the day without a cup of coffee. According to Australian startup company Huskee, founded by a group of coffee lovers, the average coffee drinker is responsible for over 3 kilogrammes (6.6 pounds) of coffee husk waste each year. Further, the global production of coffee generates over 1.35 million tonnes of husk waste annually. While a portion of the waste becomes fertiliser, a significant amount of husk waste remains as landfill. For this reason, Huskee has introduced a coffee cup composed of coffee husk material and organic resin that serves as an alternative to ceramic coffee cups – the HuskeeCup.

Aiming to revolutionise waste disposal during coffee production, Huskee produces their eco-friendly coffee cups using husks from coffee farms in Yunnan, China. According to the company, the HuskeeCup has superior thermal retention compared to ceramics, as well as being durable, recyclable and dishwasher friendly. Its fins aid with grip and thermal dispersion, while the cup’s contours make it comfortable to hold and easy to stack.

Huskee is currently offering 6oz (180ml), 8oz (240ml) and 12oz (360ml) cups through their Kickstarter campaign, starting at AU$39 for a set of four 6oz cups and with an expected delivery early next year. Additional sizes and features are already in the works.
