Asics GEL-LYTE III OG & GEL-LYTE XXX

For many Hongkongers, visiting Tokyo is always jokingly referred to as going back to one’s hometown — that’s how significant the city is to them. It’s understandable why people are so drawn to Tokyo with its natural charm and character, especially with how it so effortlessly combines modern and traditional elements of Japanese culture. Now Japanese sportswear brand Asics is paying tribute to this vibrant megacity with a new collection of running shoes, “The Modern Tokyo Pack”.

A new rendition of Asics’ GEL-LYTE III OG shoe, initially released in 1990 and designed by Shigeyuki Mitsui, features the original shape and construction while incorporating a split-tongue application inspired by the GEL-LD RACER. Its black and white patterns are a nod to the renowned Shibuya crossing – a must-see for any tourist visiting the bustling central city. The coordinates showcased on the design are those of the Japan National Stadium, formerly known as the New National Stadium, which was set to serve as the main venue for the now-postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The GEL-LYTE III OG has a synthetic leather and mesh upper, as well as retro nylon underlays which evoke some serious ’90s vibes.

The GEL-LYTE XXX shares the same black and white theme and puts a modern twist on the classic design, featuring advanced materials and technologies in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the GEL-LYTE III. The upper construction is revamped with no-sew overlays and an asymmetrical lacing system, which not only looks great but also helps reduce forefoot irritation, while FLYTEFOAM technology in the midsole offers pronounced propulsion.

The GEL-LYTE III OG is also available in women’s sizes with mint accents featuring in the design.
