Jaguar Changes Course for Electrical Models

Jaguar is reported to have abandoned the plan of bringing the C-x75 supercar concept into production, and will focus instead on developing two electric vehicles. According to Automobile Magazine, the previous plan for releasing successors of the XK line have also been shelved.

One of the EVs is codenamed X590 and will be a four-door coupe with a rear hatch, as a sort of compromise between the desired coupe from Jaguar Land Rover design director Ian Callum and CEO Ralf Speth’s conventional sedan. The luxury EV is set to rival Tesla’s Model S with its all-wheel drive, while hopefully gaining some advantage over future German luxury EVs such as the Mercedes EQS and BMW 9 Series. Jaguar will utilise the featured platform previously overseen by ex-BMW engineer Wolfgang Ziebart that embraced advanced autonomous driving capability.

The second EV, initially planned for Range Rover, would be an SUV coming to market in 2019. It will offer drivetrain options with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, and will feature three battery packs that focus either on performance, range or charge time. The two electric models will be manufactured by Australian maker Manga, with annual production of up 30,000 X590s and up to 50,000 units for the more affordable SUV.
