It’s All About Perception
The Somnambulant

The photo series ‘The Somnambulant’ by photographer Jonathan May is a visual journey that brings you into the life of a former Russian soldier named Yuri. Told by Jonathan, Yuri has experienced sleep-walking after returning home from service. Originally, he just stands in the hallway of his home, but later his sleep-walking progressively develops into wandering the streets to the point where his wife Natasha receives calls from neighbours to pick him up in their front yard. Jonathan May suggests that Yuri may be suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Yuri’s details perfectly explain the mysterious, confusing feeling as well as the insecurity conveyed in May’s photographs because you are viewing from Yuri’s perspective rather than your own. Whether Yuri is real or a fictional character is not important.
