Inspired by Blade Runner
Nihon Noir by Tom Blachford

Melbourne-based photographer Tom Blachford is apparently a fan of the classic cyberpunk movie Blade Runner, as it has inspired him to travel all the way to Tokyo, one of the most cyberpunk cities in the world, to produce this series of neo-noir images dubbed ‘Nihon Noir’.

Blachford actually spent six days straight, from dusk to dawn, working through a list of 20-odd buildings he had plotted on Google Maps, just to capture some of the fantastical buildings in the city such as the Nagakin Capsule Tower, Fuji TV Headquarters and the Edo-Tokyo Museum, all at an otherwise-impossible angles.

“My goal for the series was to communicate the feeling that struck me the first time I visited Tokyo, that somehow you have been transported to this advanced and amazing parallel universe,” Blachford explains to Wallpaper*. “I wanted to inject some mystery into the city and have the images be as confusing and mysterious as the place feels to me every time I visit.”
