BMW pays tribute to MotoGP Safety Cars

BMW M vehicles have been serving as the official MotoGP Safety Cars since 1999, leading the premier class of motorcycle racers safely from venue to venue. With the 2018 MotoGP season wrapped up last month, BMW has taken this quiet time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this partnership with a short clip.

The video showcases some of the highlights throughout the 20-year lineup of  BMW M division safety cars, from the legendary 2002 BMW Z8, 2007 E89 BMW Z4 M and 2011 BMW 1 Series M to the more recent M4 and M2 and of course, this year’s M5 Competition. What they share in common is the motorsport DNA, high-performance and ability to tackle challenges on the circuit, plus special modifications like an expanded cockpit and control centre for light signal programmes and flashing frequencies. As we are not entirely clear which model will make the MotoGP races safer next year, let’s just pay attention to these critical four-wheelers from the past.
