Images That Vanish
Wang Ningde: Form of Light

When others are discussing if his work is morphing from photography to installation art, Wang Ningde insists that his collection ‘Form of Light’ is about the nature of photography.

In ‘Form of Light’, photography serves as only part of the creation process, but the final work is no ordinary photograph at all. Every piece of work starts from a regular photo, which is then cut into many small grids calculated by a computer program with a projection formula. They are printed on transparent film and then assembled into the board one-by-one. When the spotlight at the top is on, the original image appears through light and shadow. Visitors experience an illusionary feeling created intentionally by Wang that lets us reflect on what is real and what is imaginary in the tens of dozens of images we see each day. When the spotlight is turned off, the piece of artwork disappears too.

Anything you have just seen can vanish in the blink of your eye.
