Volkswagen announced its return to the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb at the end of last year. With the famous mountain race taking place on 24 June, the automaker revealed a few rendering images of the new electric car.

Dubbed I.D. R Pikes Peak, the four-wheel drive sports car will compete in the Unlimited class. Dedicated to prototypes, there is nearly unlimited technical freedom in this class and only safety-related rules apply. From the looks of the images, the sports car features a huge rear wing and fenders, and has a sense of futurism in its design.

To Volkswagen, the I.D. R Pikes Peak almost serves as an ambassador for the future electric I.D. family, showcasing the potential sportiness in an electric car, while being part of the sportiest R GmbH range. It is also the first step in showing intensified cooperation between Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Motorsport, which are the high performance and motorsport divisions of the brand respectively.
