The Cyclotron Bike

You’ll not find anything remotely similar to the Cyclotron Bike, the Kickstarter project that has gone through three years of intense development. With pledges already exceeding the goal, it looks like the project could become the next big thing in bicycle history. Let’s start with the uncompromising appearance: its super eye-catching TRON-like LED halos on the wheels and the laser lane display look incredible. As expected, they are controlled by a sensor which switches them on automatically when day turns into night.

The Cyclotron frame’s space-grade carbon fibre monocoque looks bulkier than average, but it’s extremely lightweight without impairing the bike’s stability. By combining two layers of carbon fibre with an ultra-lightweight core structure, the frame requires less carbon fibre and resin, keeping the weight between 11.5kg to 11.8kg depending on the selected gearbox. The silhouette is sleek and clean with hubless wheels and no chains. The airless tires are a solid polymer that can last for over 6,000 miles. Having no spokes in the wheels also means those spaces can be used for carrying shopping bags or even provide passenger seating with special add-on accessories.

Some of the bike’s features such as recording real-time cycling data from every ride are managed through a smart app. With optional subscription services, riders can switch on a GPS bike finder to prevent theft, or use the bike to track calories burnt via Cyclotron Smart Coach.

Even though the project has passed its goal, the Cyclotron is still available for pre-order on or before July 23rd, with expected delivery in June 2017. Some of the early-bird offers remain open. Expect pricing to range from 999 Euros for the standard manual 12-speed version to 2,599 Euros for an E-gear 18-speed version.
