McLaren TOONED Special Edition: #Hunt40

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of James Hunt’s 1976 Formula 1 championship win, McLaren just released a new episode of its TOONED animation series. Created by the London-based Oscar-winning visual effects house Framestore, the three-minute special edition features original animation aired in 2013 for McLaren’s 50th-anniversary celebrations, re-edited and infused with fresh material.

In the new short clip, we see former world champion McLaren-Honda racers Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button chilling under the sun in Monaco, as Button recounts the story of James Hunt and reveals his real identity as a secret agent, James Bond style. Hunt takes up a mission mid-race, follows his targets all the way up into the mountains and eventually returns to his Formula 1 car equipped with an ejector seat. By the end of the clip, it’s revealed that both Alonso and Button, as well as Stoffel Vandoorne, are agents as well. Watch the funny clip and discover how they acquired their secret identities.

It’s great to see teams taking such a light approach to marketing, and aren’t shy of poking a little fun at themselves.
