Envisioning the Ferraris of 2040
Ferrari Top Design School Challenge 2015

As a child who grew up in the ‘90s on cartoons like The Jetsons and the Back to the Future trilogy, I fully expected the new millennium to be chock full of hoverboards, flying cars and — for those with altitude sickness — ground vehicles that resembled Batmobiles. But, while I’ve since gotten over my disappointment at the lack of awesome, futuristic transport options available to us, concept cars and design challenges, thankfully, haven’t lost any of their excitement for me.

Most recently, Ferrari challenged over 50 design schools and students worldwide to envision the Ferraris of 2040 as part of its Top Design School Challenge for 2015. Entries were judged on pioneering materials, advanced engineering, eco-sustainability, safety and, of course, imagination and innovation, after which a shortlist consisting of four schools was put together: the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Hongik University in Korea, Hochschule Pforzheim in Germany and the ISD-Rubika in France. The jury itself consists of illustrious names like Sebastian Vettel, Paolo Pininfarina, Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay and Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason, but the public is also being encouraged to choose favorites online via the contest’s Facebook page. The winner of the Gran Premio will be announced on January 15.
