Dual-Powered Subie
Subaru mid-engined concept coupe

Subaru is reportedly developing an exciting experimental sports car. Car and Driver claim the Japanese automaker is testing the prototype in their Tochigi proving grounds and if true, is a completely new configuration for the brand; a mid-mounted turbocharged boxer engine driving the rear wheels, with two separate electric motors powering the fronts.

A modified BRZ is being used for testing, as it is the only rear-wheel-drive car in its lineup. “Whether the end result will be a two-door sports coupe or some kind of sports crossover/CUV is still in the evaluation stage,” an insider said to Car and Driver. “A coupé seems more likely, though.” If the prototype makes it into production, it will be built on the just-announced new Subaru Global Platform, and use an updated version of their 1.6-litre turbo powertrain. The total output is said to be near 330 bhp, rivalling other mid-engine sports cars such as Porsche Cayman.
