Audi takes all three DTM titles

This Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) season is a fruitful one for Audi. The German automaker scooped not only the manufacturers’ championship and the teams’ championship with Team Rosberg, rookie driver René Rast from also took the drivers’ championship in his debut season.

This season’s last race weekend took place in Hockenheim, where René Rast snatched the drivers’ title from three other fellow Audi drivers Jamie Green, Mike Rockenfeller and Mattias Ekström, the latter whom Rast once stood in for in 2016. So far only seven drivers have taken the drivers’ title in their first season in DTM. The last one was Nicola Larini, driving an Alfa Romeo 155,  in 1993.

The last time Audi took all three DTM titles in the same year was 13 years ago in 2004, with Mattias Ekström being the drivers’ champion.

“What a finale! The many spectators who traveled to Hockenheim in this fantastic fall weather arguably had no reason for regrets,” said Dieter Gass, Head of Audi Motorsport. “The DTM this year showed a strong upward curve. That’s why we’re already very much looking forward to the title defense next season.”
