Deconstruct To Build
Tom Sachs for Salon 94 Design

American artist Tom Sachs has long been on the public’s radar. In fact, the sculptor has over 30 years worth of art pieces to his name. At Design Miami, held this past weekend, Sachs created a room filled with furniture for Salon 94 Design.

The collection of furniture is made of plywood and polycarbonate, and was his first attempt at investigating industrialised production. The collection includes chairs with and without arms, a lounge chair and tables in various sizes. Inspired by the traditional Japanese sawhorse, the pieces were milled by a robot, then hand-finished and assembled in the studio.

In the booth there was also Sachs’s previous work, ‘Small Chawan Cabinet’, which showcased the artist’s quest in creating the perfect chawan, the ritual bowl used for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.
