Crystal Clear Sophistication
Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos 568 by Marc Newson

There is no such thing as redundancy in the world of Marc Newson’s designs. All of his projects, be it a small household object or a physical space, share the same aesthetics with strong outlines and minimal fuzziness; it remains the same for his latest timepiece, Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos 568 by Marc Newson. The Sydney-born designer has been collaborating with the Swiss luxury manufacturer since 2008, and their latest release is both a celebration and continuation for this traditional timepiece.

The Atmos clock was first invented almost a century ago in 1928. It doesn’t require any winding or electrical energy because its mechanism transforms ambient temperature variations into mechanical energy. The capsule at the back contains a gas blend that expands or contracts according to the temperature; the change of just one degree Celsius is enough to power the clock for two days.

For the latest Atmos 658, Marc Newson hasn’t changed many of the technical aspects: his involvement is confined to the appearance. Newson uses Baccarat crystal for the cube-shaped case which rests on three little metallic feet. The supplementary material of the clock is brushed steel, with blue used as an accent colour for the numerals, hands and moon phase. It is worth mentioning that Atmos 568 is not a limited edition like their previous collaborations and is priced at US$ 28,000.
