Contemporary Derby from the Traditional Shoemaker
Church’s for Nitty Gritty Store Leyton 2 Rois

Founded in 1873 by Thomas Church and his three sons, Church’s is a brand that has become synonymous with handmade, traditional British footwear of the highest quality. Not surprisingly, the venerable brand still makes its shoes the old-fashioned way and each pair undergoes over 250 detailed manual operations before it leaves the factory in Northampton. Church’s isn’t entirely resistant to change, however, and the shoemaker recently partnered with Stockholm-based retailer, Nitty Gritty Store, to offer a contemporary take on the classic derby shoe.

Part of the “Contemporary Goodyear Welted Collection,” the collaborative Leyton 2 Rois calf derby combines special oil treatments applied by hand to the sole, as well as a sophisticated tanning process that softens the leather. The entire package sits atop a chunky rubber sole, while the interior is heat-embossed with the Church’s logo and the company’s provenance. The silhouette is also offered in a stone-colored suede version, and is a wonderful example of modern design and traditional craftsmanship.
