1954 Ferrari 375 America Coupe by Vignale

In early 1950’s, interest in the Ferrari brand was growing, but some of the potential clients were slightly cautious about the powerful, competition levels of performance for daily use as it was not easy to have the engine detuned. Tailored to that sector of the market, the automaker introduced the 342 America with more of a GT appearance in 1951, and subsequently the ultra rare 375 America that only 12 examples were produced.

The 375 America featured chassis and suspension similar to the 250 GT, but a bigger 4.5-litre Lampredi V-12 that delivered around 400 hp. Four 375 America were finished with custom coachwork form Alfredo Vignale, and the particular example with chassis no. 0327 AL was of them. The car stole the limelight at 1954 Geneva Motor Show before it was delivered to owner Robert C. Wilke of Leader Card Company. 0327 AL was refurbished in recent years in burgundy and silver grey like he original colour scheme and with correct taillights. The coupe is still with its original engine six decades and more after it was first released and numerous changes of ownership. This  splendid example will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in Monterey sale next month.
