Cityscapes In Light
Philip Barlow

Shimmering lights and brilliant colours in the urban landscape never fails to amaze us. This body of work, created by South African artist Philip Barlow using his preferred medium of oils on canvas, is exactly how to capture a still moment inside movement. It is similar to a photo being shot when the AF engine of the lens is finding its focus length or when our eyes are watery, especially for the series of ‘Night’ and ‘City’. They might seem a little surreal, but you certainly feel a sense of familarity with the scenarios being presented. In the minutia, you can see clearly how light is reflected off buildings, glass, pedestrians, painstakingly drawn into the details. His work is vivid, but at the same time looks reveals scenes like fragments within our memories, waiting to be appreciated and preserved for future recall.
