“Velo” is French for a bicycle. The number “6” represents the six members of the cycling team and also the street number for VELO6 Cycling Cafe.
Located at 6 Wo On Lane, Central, VELO6 stands beneath a grove of towering trees where instead of pedestrians one finds bicycles parked underneath in the shade. The cultural landscape feels more like Copenhagen, or the small communities in Taipei.
“We are a Cycling Cafe, but our passion lies not only within the sport of cycling. It is about the whole culture and lifestyle,” said one of the owners, William. He went on to point out that VELO6 is more than just a hub for actual bikers, rather it’s also a gathering spot for anyone who enjoys bicycle designs and the culture of cycling.
VELO6 is a mecca of high-quality international cycling brands rarely seen locally. Their product list includes bicycle pumps by SILCA SuperPista, bicycle bells by Spurcycle, and bags by Freitag. As VELO6 became more of a gathering place, they naturally sought out a selection of food for their customers. A highlight of their menu is a selection of Carmen’s Best products from the Philippines. This brand maintains a private farm to ensure the quality of their ingredients, and their 2:1 ratio of cream and milk recipes has attracted the famous, recently adding Pope Francis. During his trip to the Philippines, he drank four glasses of Carmen’s Best on his flight, underlining how much he favours the brand.
Another VELO6 highlight is their Elektra Italian coffee machine. This machine, Possessing more than has 70-years worth of history, the machine brews the VELO6 Grand, and House coffee brands. Customers can sit at the bar table and enjoy their hot espressos while reading cycling materials provided by the VELO6 library. And of course, customers are encouraged to chit-chat with the store staff about their favourite cycling related topics.
