A few days ago, Philippe Lavoué, Nintendo’s French managing director confirmed in an interview that the company has no plans to explore 4K or Virtual Reality support.

Its no secret that Nintendo’s main competitors Sony and Microsoft have been progressively developing 4K-level content and the former has released its own VR headset. However, Lavoué doubts if VR can appeal to the mainstream, as he thinks customers would rather have an “all-inclusive package” than pay to expand their hardware with headsets and other augments. He also questions how useful investment in 4K technology might be, as it has not been adopted by the mainstream players, and claims that Nintendo is a smaller company than its competitors. Rather than directly compete with Microsoft or Sony, Lavoué thinks that the company should offer a different path, adapting to their players’ pace of life with the Nintendo Switch.

The newly introduced Nintendo Labo is perhaps one of their solutions, offering a brand new interactive experience for Switch gamers. It is a series of DIY kits that requires players to build Toy-Con creations from cardboard that interacts with the Switch console and its Joy-Con controllers. You can create the Toy-Con in a variety of shapes, such as a motorbike, a fishing rod or a piano, and then place the Switch in these creations to bring them to life. Once built, you can customise your Toy-Con creations with your markers, stickers and paint to make them one-of-a-kind.

The Nintendo Labo launches on April 27 with the Variety and Robot kits being the first available.
