Capturing Tokyo in Motion
Tokyo street car photography by Jonathan Taylor

Amid Tokyo’s dense traffic, neon glow and late-night car meets, Jonathan Taylor has carved out a distinctive voice in contemporary automotive culture through his photography. The Danish-born photographer is now based in Tokyo and known on Instagram as @pizza_turismo, documenting the city’s automotive life with an enthusiasm and dedication that comes through even on a phone screen.

His subjects range widely. By day, he might capture a rare Ferrari or Lamborghini weaving through Tokyo traffic; by night, he can be found photographing tuned JDM machinery at informal gatherings in Daikoku or Tatsumi parking areas. He also turns his lens toward circuit events when the opportunity arises, and frequently documents the everyday cars that form the backdrop of the city’s constant movement.

A major shift came in 2023, when Taylor moved almost entirely to film. Working with cameras such as the Nikon FA, FE and F4, alongside a Fuji GSW690III and Olympus Mju, he leans on Fuji 400 for daytime shoots and Marix 800T for its cinematic nocturnal tones.

Taylor is also unafraid to experiment. He frequently stacks a circular polarising filter with a star filter to create soft highlights and a hazy, dreamlike ambience. He mixes in films such as Santacolor 100, Harman Phoenix II and Fuji Superia X-Tra to disrupt routine and explore new palettes, and uses a range of lenses, including a Sigma 16 mm fisheye, for variety. The result is imagery rich in texture and nostalgia, a welcome counterpoint to the clinical sharpness of digital photography.
