The Vintage Tripolina

Butterfly Chair is a design that uses two curved steel rings to create a collapsible frame. Matched with a long seat cushion made out of canvas or leather, it is sewn with 4 triangular shaped clothes on each of the corners. An easily disassemble product of two parts, it is convenient to carry during travels and camping activities. Spotted by Edgar Kaufmann Jr., the director for the design department of MoMA at an exhibition during 1940, 3 chairs were sent to him after that, where one of them became a collectible at MoMa, one placed inside of Edgar’s Fallingwater designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and one still missing, which adds a sense of drama to this classic design.

Hailed as the “Best efforts of modern chair design”, it was initially an item designed for the army. The Paragon Chair which was released in 1870s has an identical design, with a frame that is connected by 4 supporting rails, making it stable even on sand. This wooden frame is entitled as the Tripolina(1881). The chair we see here which was found in India uses wood and metallic stents for its base, making it a relatively larger and heavier design. Matched with a set of leather seating covers, its texture is tough and durable. Whether assessing the function or the minimalistic appearance it offers, it will always be classified as a timeless classic.
