Ben Gorham is a Canadian and Indian mix, who has lived in Toronto, New York, Stockholm, and other places. He was able to soak up the different cultures through his nomadic lifestyle. After he has graduated from fine arts school, he became obsessed with painting. It was when he was introduced to perfumer Pierre Wulff, did he change his artistic direction completely. He then started his perfume kingdom BYREDO, which means “By Redolence”. Each of his perfume has a story, and the following three scents are not only suitable for different men, but they are also great for wearing on different days, to attend different occasions.
Mister Marvelous
The prestigious hair stylist Christiaan Houtenbos is the pioneer of the Undercut style. He has an avant-garde vision, and has great passion for his work. He is naughty but not unruly, and he is seen as “Mister Marvelous” in Ben’s eyes. He has once said that, “Because when things are just a bit off kilter, a little twisted or turned in shape, they become that much more interesting.”
Sunday Cologne
In Italy, cologne is every gentleman’s basic essential, because they are all about etiquette. You can easily find a bottle placed either next to the neatly stacked towels in any toilets, or just sitting on the windowsill of any households. Delivering a tint of fresh citrus aroma, this perfume proves that there are no age limit when it comes to scent. It is like subtly showing off your ankle in your latest outfit, and feeling good about it. It makes everyday feel like a perfect Sunday.
M/Mink
Established by Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Azalag in 1992, the art duo M/M Paris is best known for their collaborations with other famous artists and musicians. They have once invited Ben to their Paris workshop, where they showed him several pieces of treasures they have found from around the world. Including a solid ink block from Asia; a profile image of a Japanese calligrapher who is practicing his writing; as well as a large utopian formula that Mathias has drawn on Korean traditional paper, they have become inspirations for Ben. Together with perfumer Jérôme Epinette, the three items have been reinterpreted into a perfume which delivers a faint ink smell.
