Beyond Fashion
Rei Kawakubo’s Furniture Exhibition in Paris

Famed for her avant-garde fashion design, and how she broke into the international fashion scene as a Japanese designer in the 1980s, Rei Kawakubo is a true pioneer not just in fashion, but other disciplines, such as furniture design, although that fact remains relatively unknown.

Parisian Galerie A1043 is showcasing 15 pieces of furniture designed by Rei Kawakubo, including the Steel Angle Chair n°1 and Table n°3, which were both created in 1993 and described as “extension of the fixtures” inside the COMME des GARÇONS stores. According to the gallery, Kawakubo designed over 40 pieces of furniture between 1983 and 1993.

“For Kawakubo, everything is connected, the district in which the shop is located, the clothes, the layout and the furniture of course,” says the gallery. “Her furniture should, therefore, be considered part of the complete work.”

The exhibition runs from October 10 until December 22.
