Behind Closed Canopies
McLaren-Honda F1 near-future concept

With the 2016 Formula 1 season done and dusted, we look forward to the next, as plenty of changes are included in the 2017 regulations. Wider, faster and more aggressive race cars with fatter tyres are on the way, but the controversial halo head protection device didn’t make it to the final manual. Drivers’ safety is always a key concern and with that in mind Dutch designer Andries van Overbeeke has shown us his vision for a near-future F1 car with an enclosed cockpit.

Naysayers in the industry have always pointed out that a closed cockpit would just make the car ugly, but Overbeeke’s concept proves them wrong with its streamlined aesthetic. The canopy would certainly increase safety for the driver and at the same time allow for better racing in the rain.

Overbeeke has also reworked the overall proportions of the car. The rear tyres are wider and with an increased diameter. The car itself is also wider, while the front wing is smaller and less complex in an effort to reduce sensitivity to turbulent air. Overbeeke’s suggestions are all realistic and doable, but it is up to Formula 1 to decide if a concept from an enthusiast could ever influence regulations in the coming years.
