Beauty In The Jet Age
1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic by Ghia

Featuring a mid-1950s retro-future aesthetic, the 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic was not just revolutionary but also highly exclusive. Based on “Otto Vu”, the model featured the only overhead-valve V8 Fiat ever built. Out of the 114 examples of Otto Vu, only 15 8V Supersonics were bodied with Giovanni Savonuzzi’s stunning Ghia Jet Age design.

Renowned collector Orin Smith acquired this beauty in 2015 for USD 1.8 million after an eight-year comprehensive restoration. Mechanical and detail work had been completed both inside and out, including the rebuilt and upgraded engine, transmission, suspension components, brakes, differential, steering box, and even the dashboard toggle switches, making the car as close to factory original standard as possible. The Supersonic’s dazzling qualities were honoured at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance with the People’s Choice Award. Smith has now decided to put it back up for sale, and it will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s during the same event this year in March. With its pristine condition, the 8V will continue to shine in historic car concours or rallies for many years, whoever its new ‘custodian’ might be.
