Be Playful
MB&F HM8 Only Watch 2017

As we have covered in a previous post, the biennial Only Watch auction will take place in November, with the intention of raising funds for the benefit of research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy. While some watchmakers have created the ultimate luxurious versions of one of their classic models for Only Watch, the nonconforming Maximilian Büsser of MB&F is bringing us probably the most playful Only Watch that perfectly fits the purpose.

Taking the Can-Am race car-inspired HM8 as the basis of this creation, the HM8 Only Watch features the doodles of Cassandra Legendre, a 15-year old student from Madrid whom Büsser discovered through social media last year, engraved and metallised on the sapphire crystal pane. A robot, jet plane, toy car, jellyfish, ice cream as well as other childlike elements can be spotted in the drawing.

One element from Legendre’s drawing is particularly highlighted: there is an elephant sculpture situated under the racing-inspired roll bar closest to the minutes disc. Placed on a mini white-gold plinth, the white gold elephant took 120 hours to hand-craft by Oliver Kuhn, with the finest point of the tusks measuring only 0.2 mm in diameter.

Another interesting feature of the HM8 Only Watch is the white gold disc on the watch surface. On the original HM8 it features two screws and the MB&F logo, while on the Only Watch it has been changed to a smiley face. Using Legendre’s drawing is meaningful and fit for a purpose, as it shows a young adult creating something to help children who may not easily realise their dreams because of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
