An Artistic Condemnation
Mandy Barker

Besies focusing on her photography career, Mandy Barker has also always been a very passionate environmentalist. In recent years, she has photographed plastic debris around the globe, wishing to raise awareness of plastic pollution among the public through her work. Barker has assembled different series of her “waste” work found along her sailing trips, like the ‘Hong Kong Soup:1826’ which is composed of the plastic waste collected on the beaches in Hong Kong. The ‘PENALTY’ series comprises 992 pieces of marine debris pulled from the world’s oceans in just four months. In the series ‘WHERE’, tiny fragments of released balloons that flew up to an altitude of 5 miles are shown now beautifully transformed into sparkling “stardust”, reminding us of the destruction we have nonchalantly caused, symbolised by this attractive waste revealed in artistic form.
