We forgive you for thinking these images are computer-generated renderings; they are in fact real photographs.

Swiss photographer, Fabian Oefner is fascinated by the clean, crisp look of 3D renderings, and his works combine that particular type of aesthetic with the strength of real photography to produce exceptional images. He presents exploded views of iconic cars, created by deconstructing scale-models, photographing each component piece by piece in a very particular position, and then blends into one single image. The whole process takes two months.

Each of these model cars contains over a thousand components, and before taking apart them piece by piece, Oefner first sketches the proper placement of each piece. Then, according to his initial rendering, he poses each piece individually in perspective with the aid of fine needles and pieces of string. After meticulously working out the angle of each shot and establishing the right lighting, Oefner photographs that component; he then repeats each step for each element. Finally, these individual photos are then blended in post-production to create each “Disintegrating II” image. With the wheels acting as reference points, each part was masked in Photoshop, cut and then pasted into the final image.

Photography usually captures distinct moments in time, but Oefner’s “Disintegrating II” series is all about inventing that moment in time. “What you see in these images, is a moment that never existed in real life,” says Oefner. “What looks like a car falling apart is, in fact, a moment in time that has been created artificially by blending over 2000 individual images together.”

For the second edition of his “Disintegrating” series, Oefner offers five images showing exploded views of iconic sports cars include Porsche 956, Audi Auto Union Type C, Maserati 250F, Ford GT40 and Bugatti 57 SC. The artworks are now on display at the MB&F M.A.D.Gallery Geneva, the same venue which hosted the debut of the initial three images of the “Disintegrating” series back in 2013.
