Adding The Human Factor
Roborace’s DevBot 2.0

Roborace, the organisation for driverless racing, has revealed DevBot 2.0, the latest version of their development car which will be used in the Season Alpha of racing kicking off next year. The DevBot 2.0, like the original DevBot, is designed by Daniel Simon and inspired by the overall style of the Le Mans Prototype, but the new version will be rear-wheel-drive instead of all-wheel-drive. The styling and hardware have also been updated.

Roborace also reworked the format of the race, at least for the first two years which they call Season Alpha and Season Beta. Instead of racing 10 fully autonomous Robocars, we will see numerous teams racing with DevBot 2.0 using both self-driving and manually-controlled cars. Each DevBot 2.0 will be piloted by a human driver for part of the race, then by a computer with artificial intelligence for the rest of it. Roborace believes that the changing the format to human + machine will help teams to “fully understand how the car thinks and feels on a racetrack alongside the comprehensive real-time data.” A new fully autonomous Robocar will be released on 2021, and by then we shall be able to see the race with just driverless race cars.
