A Transformed Concept
H-Line Hat by Zaha Hadid Architects

Residential building 520 West 28th, designed by the late Zaha Hadid, opened its doors in New York earlier this year. The firm’s first New York project is adjacent to the High Line, a public park built on a disused railroad section that was preserved and transformed by a local community named Friends of the High Line. The organisation is now hosting the first High Line Hat Party to raise funds for the maintenance and operation of the park, and has invited Zaha Hadid Architects to create a hat for the occasion.

Designed by the firm’s principal Patrik Schumacher, who was also involved in the creation of the 520 West 28th condo, the 3D-printed H-Line hat is inspired by the aesthetic of the building. The condo features interlocking chevrons on a hand-crafted steel façade that looks fresh and modern in the context of the neighbourhood, reflecting a relationship between the site’s history and its latest iteration. The design of the H-Line hat echoes the steel chevrons, with its patterns fluidly weaving around the wearer’s head with open and closed forms.
