A Table For Every Need
Ping Pong Table In Eyes Of Hayahisa Tomiyasu

In 2011, Japanese photographer Hayahisa Tomiyasu lived in a study dorm while in Leipzig, Germany. When he glanced from the window of his room, he had a clear view of the public athletic field below, and especially a ping-pong table which caught his attention. After a few days, he discovered that people from different countries used the ping-pong table in so many different ways, a regular ping-pong game was rare.

Some used the table as a stand to clean their beloved dog while others used it as a bed for sweet dreams, or to keep fit, not to mention as a dining table for beer and parties. During these moments, Tomiyasu recorded the humble ping-pong table as it attracted diverse people with different thoughts or needs, demonstrating that the table’s new uses turned out to be of more importance than its original function. As further proof of that table’s many invisible values, Tomiyasu’s commemorative photography series named ‘TTP’ is on the 2018 First Book Award shortlist.
