Boolean Operator by THEVERYMANY

New York based architecture and art studio THEVERYMANY, led by registered and practicing Architect Marc Fornes, specialises in innovative ultra-thin lightweight structures, pavilions, public artwork and spatial experiences. For Jinji Lake Biennial in Suzhou, China, the studio installed a large-scale outdoor pavilion on an elevated plaza in the city.

Named “Boolean Operator” for its function that determines relationships between statements, geometries or forms, the 49-foot pavilion creates a unique interior space only separated from its surroundings by a permeable 2mm aluminium shell in white. The spherical mesh leaves a trail of non-linear stripes leading to the two directions of flow curves, resulted from a structural analysis on digital 3D geometry. The interesting shape means that it casts no regular shadows, and give little information to the eye to perceive its scale or depth when viewing it from afar. Even though Boolean Operator remains embedded in the city, it transcends the surrounding environment for its visitors with its constellation of openings in the skin.
