A New Chapter Awaits
Mercedes-Benz EQ Silver Arrow 01 Formula E Car

Mercedes-Benz will be competing for both Formula 1 and Formula E for the first time at the end of this year. It will be the very first name that appears in both racing series. The automaker has just unveiled its all-electric race car dubbed EQ Silver Arrow 01.

The Silver Arrow 01 gets a special ‘teaser livery’ for its first public appearance, and the livery for the races will be revealed in a later stage. It’s not necessary to pinpoint the exterior details on each team’s Formula E race car because unlike Formula 1, each team uses the same Gen2 bodywork built by Dallara. Same for the 52kWh battery pack provided by McLaren Applied Technologies, while the final car is integrated by Spark Technologies. What sets each team apart are their best calculated electric motor, gearbox, inverter and front brake ducts, things that underneath the body but essentially determine who’s the winner.

With big names such as Audi, BMW, Citroën, Nissan and Jaguar already in the Formula E club, it is a logical move for Mercedes to explore into electric racing. Mercedes believes the two racing series together will be an important driver of technology for the automaker in the future. “Formula E is going to be a completely new playing field for us,” said Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. “But we are looking forward to the challenge of demonstrating the performance of our intelligent battery-electric drives in motorsport and of giving a positive boost to the EQ brand.”
