A Kind Of Hidden Order
Emergent Behavior

If you were to ask me to suggest a scene of something remarkable, I would in no doubt suggest the flocking scenes in the movie ‘The Birds’ by Sir Alfred Hitchcock in year 1963.  Perhaps it is because he has successfully shown us what fear is when we are thrown multiple things, or maybe it is just the creatures that we know nothing about make us feel overwhelmed. And yet, photographer Thomas Jackson has made good use of these phenomena to create a series named ‘Emergent Behavior’, and added new work as he was invited by the Isle of Man. In the new works, he used colourful umbrellas, paper plates, lollipops and plastic containers to make them looks like other real self-organising systems in nature, manipulating our imagination to make the images captivating and slightly creepy.
