Yorkshire-based tuner Twisted has made a name for itself by converting and custom-building icons like the Land Rover Defender and Suzuki Jimny. While its main focus has been stance and presence, the English workshop hasn’t forgotten that car culture is also about fun. Its latest special project, the TBug, is a reimagined Baja Beetle built with a lighthearted spirit and a nostalgic nod to adventure.
Twisted founder Charles Fawcett describes the TBug as a manifestation of childhood memories, inspired by the Baja Bug posters that once adorned his sister’s bedroom wall.
Built entirely from scratch using classic air-cooled Volkswagen Beetles from the 1960s to 1980s, each TBug is a unique creation — not just a restoration or simple conversion. Clients can choose the specifications, trim, colour, and options. Every car is stripped down to its chassis, which is then restored, sealed, and reinforced before being rebuilt with long-travel suspension and unmistakable Baja-inspired bodywork.
With twice the original power output — which is still under 80 hp, mind you — the TBug isn’t about chasing big numbers, but about capturing attitude and the joyful connection between car, terrain, and driver. Chunky BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres, upgraded brakes, modern touches like LED lighting and updated electronics, and a hand-finished interior blend heritage charm with comfort and functionality.
