Leica has spent over 150 years pioneering the manufacture of lenses and cameras and the German brand has always focused on what it has forever been known for… Until now. Leica has just launched not just one, but two mechanical watch models – the L1 and L2.

Predictably, the timepieces follow the timeless style of Leica cameras and feature various design details that reference photography. The domed sapphire crystal watch glass is similar to a camera lens, for example, but the most prominent reference is the “red-dot” push-crown. As much as the red dot is an iconic element found on most Leica cameras, the mechanism of the patented push-crown is in fact inspired by the shutter release button of a camera, hence the crown is pressed instead of pulled when the wearer needs to reset the second-hand or the date.

Like the cameras, Leica watches are also made in Germany. The watches were developed in collaboration with another German company, Lehmann Präzision GmbH, and most of the production was completed at Lehmann’s Black Forest site, while the watches’ exterior was conceptualized by Achim Heine – a veteran Leica designer.

The Leica L1 and L2 are basically the same, though the L2 has an additional GMT function. The stainless steel case measures 41 mm, and the matte black dial features white markers and rhodium and diamond-plated indices. The status of the 60-hour power reserve is also displayed on the dial, while both watches are water-resistant to a depth of 50 metres. The black leather strap has a red inner – another reference to the signature Leica branding.
